Declared a protected area on 9 November 2023, the Huraafaru Region encompasses both the island and its surrounding reef, forming a vibrant marine and coastal ecosystem.
This unique site shares many features with the northern part of the Hanifaru Area in Baa Atoll — a world-renowned haven for manta rays. Due to the accumulation of plankton in the waters around Huraafaru, the area attracts large numbers of manta rays, providing a crucial feeding and breeding ground for these graceful giants.
Beyond its underwater wonders, Huraafaru Finolhu serves as an important nesting and resting site for seabirds. Preserving this delicate sandbank and maintaining the natural sea currents are vital to sustaining its fragile ecosystem.
For nature lovers, divers, and conservation enthusiasts, the Huraafaru Region offers a chance to witness the Maldives’ rich biodiversity — a living reminder of why protecting these marine treasures matters.
