BRProgrammes

The Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve implements its strategy through three interrelated programmes that integrate conservation, sustainable development, and knowledge generation. The Conservation Programme safeguards terrestrial and marine ecosystems, including critical sites such as Hanifaru Bay, while maintaining biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and resilience. The Learning and Research Programme promotes environmental education, capacity building, and knowledge sharing through collaboration with schools, research institutions, NGOs, and international partners, supporting monitoring and research to inform adaptive management. The Livelihoods and Sustainable Development Programme strengthens community well-being by supporting sustainable livelihood opportunities, promoting eco-friendly enterprises, building partnerships with government and private sector stakeholders, and integrating sustainability considerations into local and atoll-level development plans. Together, these programmes enable the Biosphere Reserve to function as a model learning site, demonstrating how conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and knowledge generation can be harmonized for the benefit of both people and nature.
