The Livelihood Development Support Strategy (LDSS) outlines a strategic participatory and accountable approach to sustainable livelihood support in Baa Atoll. The LDSS guides the BR Office team in achieving sustainable development goals that align with Biosphere Reserve objectives.
The Livelihoods Programme supports livelihood development initiatives that are consistent with the objectives of the Biosphere Reserve, promoting sustainable economic opportunities while safeguarding natural and cultural resources. The programme aims to strengthen community resilience, enhance local capacity, and foster environmentally responsible development across Baa Atoll.
The Livelihoods Programme seeks to achieve the following:
Providing support to communities across Baa Atoll to identify opportunities and develop initiatives that build local capacity and create economic incentives for sustainable livelihoods.
Identifying, selecting, and supporting environmentally sustainable and nature-based livelihood projects that align with Biosphere Reserve principles.
Building long-term partnerships between Baa Atoll communities, private sector stakeholders, and public sector agencies to support sustainable livelihood development.
Ensuring livelihood support activities are aligned with national and local development plans, as well as the Baa Atoll Conservation Programme (BACP).
Strengthening the consideration of environmental sustainability within Atoll Development Plans (ADPs) and Island Development Plans (IDPs).
Increasing awareness among key stakeholder groups on the importance of sustainability for long-term prosperity and well-being in the Atoll, complementing awareness-raising activities undertaken by the BACP.
Supporting Baa Atoll in strengthening the assessment of environmental impacts within ADPs and IDPs, while streamlining approaches to sustainable livelihood development.
Through these actions, the Livelihoods Programme contributes to balanced development that supports economic growth, environmental protection, and community well-being within the Biosphere Reserve.
