Research

Biosphere Reserves are designated learning sites for sustainable development, integrating biodiversity conservation with the sustainable use of natural resources through research, monitoring, and education. Each biosphere reserve contributes local solutions to global environmental challenges.

World Biosphere Reserves are places where conservation, research, and development successfully interconnect. They integrate biological and cultural diversity by combining core protected areas with buffer and transition zones, where sustainable development practices and innovative approaches are fostered, tested, and implemented by local communities and enterprises.

As learning sites under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, research plays a fundamental role in biosphere reserve activities and management.

All research activities (both academic and non-academic) undertaken within the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve require prior approval. Researchers are required to formally communicate with the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office before initiating any research activities to ensure compliance with national regulations, permitting requirements, and effective coordination.

Following endorsement by the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office, all research proposals must obtain final approval from the Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA) of the Maldives. Research activities may only commence upon receipt of approval from ERA.

For further information, guidance on research procedures, and assistance with the approval process, interested parties are requested to contact the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office.
