Dharavandhoo Island is located in the eastern part of Baa Atoll, approximately 120 kilometers northwest of Malé. The island holds a strategic position near Hanifaru Bay, one of the Maldives’ most renowned marine protected areas, famous for its seasonal gatherings of manta rays and whale sharks.
With a domestic airport offering regular flights to and from Malé and other atolls, Dharavandhoo is among the most accessible inhabited islands in the Maldives. Over the years, it has developed into a popular local tourism hub, home to a growing number of guesthouses and related facilities catering to visitors exploring the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll.
Historically, Dharavandhoo served as the administrative capital of Baa Atoll until 1962, when the capital was relocated to Eydhafushi.
The local population primarily engages in fishing, tourism, and crafts. In recent years, the growth of guesthouses has introduced new economic opportunities for the island’s residents.
