Dhonfan pronounced as Dhonfanu is located in the northeastern part of Baa Atoll, approximately 120 kilometers northwest of Malé.
The island’s economy is mainly based on fishing, traditional craftsmanship, and, more recently, tourism. The local community maintains a traditional lifestyle, offering visitors a genuine look into Maldivian customs and everyday life.
The island is well known for its vibrant house reef, a popular spot for diving and snorkeling with turtles. Visitors frequently encounter Hawksbill and Green Turtles grazing on leather corals along the shallow top reef at around 5 meters, making it an ideal site for snorkelers to swim alongside these graceful marine reptiles. The reef also features colorful giant clams and a wide variety of reef fish.
The island is located just adjacent to Hanifaru Bay, one of the Maldives’ most renowned marine protected areas, famous for its seasonal gatherings of manta rays and whale sharks.
