Kendhoo Island is situated in the western part of Baa Atoll, approximately 120 kilometers northwest of Malé.
Kendhoo is renowned for its historical and cultural importance, most notably for its ancient mosque (Kendhoo Magaamfulhu) adorned with intricate coral stone carvings that stand as a testament to the island’s rich heritage. According to local tradition, the island was visited by the Arabian scholar Abdul Barakaath Yoosuf al-Barbari, also known as Thabreyzgefaanu, who is believed to have introduced Islam to the Maldives in 1153.
In addition to its historical significance, Kendhoo is also well known for its traditional medicinal practices, which continue to be preserved and passed down through generations.
