Capacity Building Workshop on IUCN Green List Standards

The National Capacity Building Workshop on IUCN Green List Standard for Protected and Conserved Areas Management in the Maldives was held from 27 October to 29 October 2025 in Eydhafushi.

The three-day workshop brought together participants from Addu Nature Park, Fuvahmulah Nature Park, South Ari Marine Protected Area, Laamu Atoll Protected Area and Shaviyani Atoll Farukolhu Protected Area along with representatives from Ministry of Tourism and Environment.

The main objectives of the workshop are to strengthen the effectiveness of Protected and Conserved Areas Management in the Maldives through enhanced biodiversity conservation, improved governance, and equitable management practices.

The opening session was graced by Minister of State for Tourism and Environment Mr. Abdulla Ziyad together with the President of the Baa Atoll Council Mr. Ahmed Afrah, who both delivered inspiring remarks highlighting the importance of strengthening the governance and effectiveness of Marine Managed Areas across the Maldives.

Using the IUCN Green List Standard as a framework, participants will be engaging in knowledge sharing, self-assessment, and planning sessions to develop a national Roadmap toward Green List Certification
