Bathalaa Region

Bathala Region was declared a protected area on 5 June 2011. The designated zone encompasses Bathalahuraa Reef and the surrounding islands within the reef, including the channels north and south of Bathalaa Reef, as well as the islands of Gaagandufaru Huraa and surrounding islands to the north and Vinaneiyfaru Huraa with their associated reefs and islands to the south.

The region supports exceptionally high biodiversity, characterized by extensive populations of soft and hard corals, and a diverse community of associated marine vertebrates and invertebrates. Bathala also serves as an important nesting ground for the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), and includes known grouper aggregation and spawning sites, underscoring its ecological significance for fisheries management. Furthermore, the islands within the protected area are recognized roosting sites for the Black-naped Tern (Sterna sumatrana), adding to the area’s value as a vital habitat supporting both marine and avian biodiversity.
