Goidhoo Koaru Area

Located on the northern side of the inhabited island of Goidhoo, the Goidhoo Koaru Area was officially declared protected on 5 June 2011. This remarkable site is home to the largest mangrove forest in Baa Atoll — and one of the largest mangrove ecosystems in the Maldives.

The area supports an exceptionally high level of biodiversity, providing vital habitat for a wide range of mangrove-associated vertebrates and invertebrates. Its rich ecosystem plays a crucial role in maintaining the environmental balance of the atoll.

Beyond its ecological importance, Goidhoo Koaru is also a popular roosting site for migratory birds, including the Ruddy Turnstone and the Northern Shoveler. During the north-east monsoon, many other migratory species can be observed resting and feeding among the mangroves, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature photographers.

For visitors seeking a glimpse of the Maldives’ hidden natural treasures, Goidhoo Koaru offers a rare and tranquil encounter with both land and sea life in perfect harmony.
