Declared a protected area on 5 June 2011, the Mathifaru Hura Region encompasses Mathifaruhurra Island and Reef (both inside and outside the atoll) as well as Dhashufaruhuraa Island and Reef (including the Dhoru Kandu channel).
This ecologically rich area is home to high biodiversity, with thriving populations of hard and soft corals, alongside numerous marine invertebrates and reef fish. The region also provides nesting sites for endangered sea turtles, including green turtles and hawksbill turtles, making it a critical habitat for these iconic species.
The area includes known grouper aggregation and spawning sites, highlighting its importance for sustaining healthy fish populations. On land, the islands serve as roosting and nesting sites for seabirds such as the Black-Naped Tern, Lesser Noddies, and Brown Noddies, offering a vibrant haven for avian life.
For visitors, Mathifaru Hura Region presents a unique opportunity to witness the Maldives’ rich marine and coastal biodiversity, where coral reefs, turtles, and seabirds coexist in a protected and thriving environment.
