Declared a protected area on 14 June 2006, Olhugiri Island and its house reef are located at the southern end of Baa Atoll. This unique island is one of only two in the Maldives where Frigate Birds, particularly the Lesser Frigate (Fregata ariel), regularly roost.
he island also serves as an important breeding site for Red-Billed Tropicbirds and provides nesting grounds for sea turtles, highlighting its vital role in supporting both avian and marine wildlife. Additionally, two freshwater mangroves lake located on the island support a diverse range of associated terrestrial life.
Olhugiri has a rich cultural and historical significance as well. In the past, it was used by traditional medicine practitioners for collecting medicinal plants and by communities from Thulhadhoo and Hithadhoo for harvesting coconuts, palm leaves, firewood, and agriculture.
